Prof. J Garry Clifford, RIP

The Department of Political Science mourns the sudden passing of our friend and colleague, Prof. J. Garry Clifford. Prof. Clifford was an impressive scholar with a deep knowledge of U.S. diplomatic history. He was a kind person who mentored many, many graduate students in his long service as Director of Graduate Studies.

Prof. Clifford’s most recent book, The World War I Memoirs of Robert P. Patterson: A Captain in the Great War, won the 2013 award for the best edited book from the Army Historical Foundation. He wrote many other articles and books, including The Citizen Soldiers: The Plattsburg Training Camp Movement, 1913-1920 (1972), America Ascendant (1985; co-author), and The First Peacetime Draft (1986; co-author). The Citizen Soldiers won the Frederick Jackson Turner Award of the Organization of American Historians. Prof. Clifford will be greatly missed.
