Internsip Program a Hit

Attendees greatly enjoyed the “Interning in Government” Information Exchange held in the Student Union on Tuesday, October 4, 2011.  This event was co-sponsored by Career Services and POLS.

The panelists who provided information regarding internship opportunities during the first half of the session included:  Kevin Bronson, UConn alum (POLS) and current Executive Assistant to the Secretary of State, on behalf of interning at the Office of the Secretary of State; Rosanne Purtill on behalf of internship opportunities with the Judicial Branch; Steve Marcelynas, on behalf of the Legislative Internship Program at the CT General Assembly; and, Prof. Virginia Hettinger POLS) who wore “two hats” on behalf of the UConn Congressional Honors Internship in D.C. and The Washington Center.  Beth Shapiro Settje, Assistant Director of Internship Resources & Development at UConn Career Services, moderated and organized the event.

In second part of the session, students had the opportunity to gather more information related to the specific internship opportunities. In this photo, Hina Samnani (a POLS and BUS double major), discusses her experiences at The Washington Center with interested students.

This information exchange was preceded by a workshop on “Writing a Federal Resume” with Beth Shapiro Settje from Career Services as well as a webinar on “Living in D.C.”  A special note of thanks goes out to one of our recent graduates, Maggie McCarthy, who provided an excellent and extremely informative presentation about interning, working, and living in D.C. to the students who attended that session.  Maggie is currently employed in the Public Affairs Office at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C.
